Course description
This workshop is for beginners as well as experienced artists. Plein-air painting the Cape School way involves the use of color to express on canvas the luminous light and temperature in the open air.
Discover how to capture the essence of a subject, rather than its detail, through liberating strokes of vibrant color. We will explore the Impressionist technique of rapid wet-on-wet painting. We will begin with basic block studies to understand color relationships and the warm and cool colors of the palette, followed by painting in the great outdoors. You can always find an ideal spot in Provincetown to paint Plein-air. I’ll keep you posted on what our schedule will be.
The Cape School of Art
The first outdoor school of painting in America began down on the sunny shores of Provincetown over one hundred years ago. The school’s mission is to educate the artist in the perception and use of color and light in representational painting.
Materials
• Portable easel
• Palette knives, brushes and paper towels
• Oil (preferred) or acrylic paints - I have two of each primary color (cadmium red, permanent rose, ultramarine blue, phthalo turquoise, cadmium yellow medium and lemon yellow) and a mix of secondary/tertiary colors (cadmium orange, cadmium green light, yellow ochre and violet) and titanium white.
• We prefer a non-toxic/odorless paint thinner. Some Artists use walnut, vegetable or linseed oil and basic Wesson oil for clean-up.
• Clamps to secure canvases to the easel and an umbrella for a bright or rainy day.
• For sunny days – hats, bottled water and sunscreen.
In the unlikely event we paint in a more congested or public area there may be a parking fee.
